Introduction
In many work places the interesting projects and promotions do not necessarily go to those most qualified; similarly, the hiring process and job interview, as they are conducted today in too many companies, do not necessarily end with the hiring of the most qualified person but the one that presents themselves better. This book will help you present yourself in the best light and excel at the job interview to maximize your chances of being hired.
The number of applicants for a given job has risen exponentially in the last few years and resumes get lost in in-boxes and on desks of the hiring companies, and a job seeker must find a way to stand above the crowd with his or her resume. To help you land an interview we have included a section on resume writing with a resume customization method that will make your resume stand out and increase your chances of getting an interview.
Once a job interview is granted, the challenge really starts. During a job interview, candidates are subject to tremendous stress and they are judged on what they say and how they say it. The job seeker has to answer tough questions and must also display knowledge, experience and sought-after character traits. In addition, he/she should gather information about the job and the company. The candidate who performs the best in this complex situation usually gets the job.
A resume, a PMP certification, a degree, networking or other means can get you an interview, but only by excelling at the interview will you get the job. It is during the job interview that you must prove you can actually do the job. If you perform badly in the interview, no matter how good your resume looks or how good your references are, it is most likely that you will not get the job.
The job interview is the critical gateway to a new position, and a job seeker cannot be prepared enough for it. This book will give you the questions that are most likely to be asked, an understanding of why they are asked and how to avoid mistakes. You will be prepared for the interview process and will understand the concept behind behavioral interviews. Most importantly, it will give you the right answers to those frequently asked questions, so you will excel in the interview and will get a job offer. In short, this book will help you perform in a stellar way.
How to Use this Book
The purpose of this book is to help you land a job, and for that, we created two complementary parts. The first part covers resume writing and the interview. In the interview section, we cover the strategies you should follow, general behavioral questions that you should master and the questions most frequently asked in a project management job interview, with suggested answers. We also grouped together questions specific to the management of information technology projects. The second part of the book is project management theory that will prepare you to answer technical project management interview questions.
The questions discussed in this book are actually used in job interviews and have been posed to the author or to people who have been interviewed for this book. Also included, are questions the author has asked when interviewing job candidates. Additional questions found in the related literature as well as questions that have stumped job candidates and have been posted on our website have been included.
Some questions include comments about the reasoning behind the question, because certain questions are used in more than one way to elicit information from the candidate.
A single incorrect answer can rule you out, but a couple of right answers can put you at the top of the list. This book is packed with answers that will give you that edge. Knowing the right answer is good, but it is just as important to know what the wrong answer is. There are several instances in this book where wrong answers are discussed.
The answers in this book address have been prepared to deliver information that you want the interviewer to know, and that will present your experience and skills in the best light.
By knowing in advance how to answer most of the questions that will be asked, you will have the confidence you need to turn the interview into your best weapon. By showing more knowledge, more experience and more confidence, you will not only be offered the job, but you may receive a higher offer.
Finding a job is stressful, especially if you are not currently working. There is a need to prepare for the job hunt quickly, and this book gives you all the advice you need in a summary format. It is concise, informative and to the point.
You’d better know the answers – there is no second chance.
